A Deeper look into Queensland's May-Aug 2026 PR
Queensland may have just had its craziest Smash Ultimate season in years. The weekly Shopping Spree hit its maximum attendance at 32 players on multiple occasions this season. Additionally, the introduction of The Next Stop Over hosting multiple games to introduce more players to our scene has also grown the scene. With the rise of tournament entrants and international talent competing in multiple events, how much did the Queensland Power Rankings get shaken up? This article will cover the players that made the rankings, the honorable mentions, names to look out for next season as well as the inactive talent that gave our players a run for their money.
1. Smay
Despite the crazy season, Smay has retained his first place ranking that he's held since last year's May-Aug period. This does not mean that this season was any easier however. Smay lost sets to Necra, J-Rods, BakedGoods and Metalotl but was able to adapt to win back multiple sets of his own. Ending with his weakest record on the PR being an even record with BakedGoods. Inactive international talent challenged the Corrin main further as Maya and Silicon both took sets from him to drive our number one player to keep improving. Shopping Spree 22 stands as his highlight placement this season, beating J-Rods twice in grand finals and set wins on Necra, AlastairBL and josh city to claim first out of the 23 entrants. The start of the season saw different characters making an appearance, with Piranha Plant, Olimar, Roy, Ridley and Joker to name a few. Coming out of a difficult season, Smay will only get better as we enter the final season of the year.
2. Necra
Necra was one of the major factors that made this season so different to previous Queensland's rankings. He took the scene by storm to reach second place within his short stay in the state. This fearless Kazuya tested everybody's composure as openings often lead to stocks evaporating in matches to quickly close out sets. Consistency was a huge strength in Necra's season, placing no lower than third at events and second being his common result. Speaking of placements, Necra's standout result can be seen at Shopping Spree 23 where he beat J-Rods, AlastairBL and Bagel before falling to Smay in a close game five grand finals to land second out of 28 entrants. Should Necra return in a future season, he will be returning with the confidence of second place in the state under his belt.
3. J-Rods
Despite the difficult season, J-Rods has stayed within the top three of Queensland's growing Smash Ultimate scene. The local Pepsi enthusiast was one of the few players to take multiple sets off of Smay with four wins. While he won multiple tournaments, Shopping Spree 22 is J-Rods' standout result this season, beating Smay, Necra and AlastairBL to land second out of the 23 entrants. Leading into the next season, this K. Rool main will have to stay vigilant to remain on top as Queensland's advantage state and combo game only gets stronger.
4. AlastairBL
Seeing a return to the PR since 2025's Jan-Apr season, AlastairBL lands at fourth place after some strong showings across stacked events. The growth of Queensland's scene was evident as the Sora had much stronger competition to try and reclaim his prior rank one placing. AlastairBL's best performance can be spotted immediately at one of the biggest events this season, Shopping Spree 19. Claiming first out of 32 entrants, his run saw him taking two sets from past PR legend Bro1 along with set wins on J-Rods, BakedGoods and josh city. Should our biggest Sora fan continue to display fantastic results, AlastairBL's next season could see a rise to dominate similarly to his performance in last year's Jan-Apr period.
5. BakedGoods
The return of another past PR player is seen here with BakedGoods claiming fifth in this chaotic season. This dedicated Bowser fan acquired the best stat out of the PR players on first place Smay with an even record. Despite only attending six events, he was able to find a bracket win over 17 attendees at FILTHY 39. Here, he beat J-Rods twice, Pram and Litty to take the tournament without dropping a set. Displaying some solid highs and overall consistency, BakedGoods will be heading into the next season with momentum and a spot on a PR this year to back up his strong performances.
6. Metalotl
Queensland's Mewtwo player continued to threaten each PR player this season with displays of adaptation and determination throughout the period. He was able to take sets from nearly all PR players including Smay, J-Rods, BakedGoods and even acquiring a tied 2-2 record on Necra. AlastairBL was the only one able to elude dropping a set to Metalotl. Out of his large attendance, The Next Stop Over 2 stands as his best result beating Smay, two sets from interstate talent Maya, and Elijah to claim first out of the 17 entrants. Although there were a few notable moments of Mewtwo's tail hurtbox holding Metalotl back, the next season could be looking even better for the Mewtwo enthusiast if he can overcome poor character matchups seen in our highest level.
7. Bagel
In seventh place, we have the only player who travelled interstate this season. Bagel attended the New South Wales Arcadian (okay this is NOT epping arcadian V), on a mission to improve and learn from interstate talent, placing seventeenth out of 91. Here, the Aegis beat TurtleCat and Kitt before losing to Nichirin and then unfortunately falling into Kengu’s deep losers run. Bagel's best local result this season can be seen at Shopping Spree 23 where he beat Metalotl, josh city and Elijah on the long losers run to place fourth out of 28 attendees. Notably, this season saw Bagel's Mario make an appearance at a few events to improve this old main of his. Next season might see more Mario usage alongside his expected Aegis as he grows confidence in the character.
8. Litty (hiiii)
Litty stays on the PR with a mix of high placings and getting out earlier than expected in her bracket runs. However, the start of the season saw a change of pace with a new pocket Pichu making an appearance for a few tournaments. The solo Daisy would make a return as she made a standout run at FILTHY 38 with the princess' power. Placing second out of 14, she beat J-Rods and Metalotl twice to claim strong wins heading into the second half of the season. The last two months didn't see as strong of results but with a tournament win at Bait n Switch 4 and other wins collected on the way, Litty remains a threat to Queensland's top level should the Daisy continue finding these highs.
9. josh city
josh city (previously known as Joser) returns to PR with a new main, Diddy Kong. His Joker did have some usage in vital sets as seen at his best tournament this season, Shopping Spree 24. With alternating usage of these two characters, he beat Metalotl twice and Bagel to reach second out of 23 entrants. While Diddy Kong was used for over 75% of the season, the use of Joker provided effective coverage for the matchups josh city needed to clinch a return to Queensland PR. With a new tag and a proven new roster, josh city is positioned well to rise the ranks next season.
Brain Power
The Gold Coast Banjo reaches HM this season with a strong high at a few events. Usually placing within top 6, consistency is seen throughout his play at the tournaments he attended. At Shopping Spree 20, Brain Power reached fifth out of the 30 attended, clutching a win on AlastairBL to make a showing for himself that top level should fear the bear and the bird. However, with a win on Litty being his only other PR win along with a lack of data on four of the ranked players, Brain Power finds himself ranked the highest out of the HMs. The win on fourth in the state shows that next season, the Banjo player leaves people wondering if he'll bringing bracket upsets and KFC with a side of eggs to future events.
AppleMan
While people are unsure whether he's truly an apple, a man or potentially both, a spotlight shines on him this season as he reaches his highest ranking yet. The Samus acquired a strong winning record on J-Rods 3W-1L, becoming one of his bracket demons throughout the season. While he has two very strong performances this season, Shopping Spree 11 stands out the most with a third placing out of the 16 attendants, beating J-Rods and Elijah on the way. One more notable performance is Shopping Spree 19 where he placed fifth out of 32, beating Bagel and strong opponents outside of the PR such as Mad and Swate. AppleMan's showing this season suggests that with a few matchups figured out, the Samus main can make a strong debut on a future PR.
Elijah
The last honorable mention for this season is Elijah, threatening a few of our PR players with sets won and close game 5's seen left and right. Shopping Spree 23 stands as his best result out of the many tournaments he attended, reaching fifth out of 28. During this bracket run, he made a massive upset on Necra in winners along with an upset on Brain Power beforehand to achieve his best result this season. With runs like this becoming more consistent, Elijah also stands as a potential player to make waves next season with the right adjustments made in his play.
Mad
Mad returns as a name to look out for this season with his occasional upsets on some PR players. With set wins over Metalotl, Bagel and Elijah, the Snake continues to pose a threat on any player's bracket run. His best result this season can be found at Shopping Spree 23 where he beat Bagel and DOc to place seventh out of the 28 attendees. Mad has also been ranked on the Queensland Showcase just one placing lower than Elijah at 13th, placing the highest out of the players that weren't PR. Should the Snake continue to improve, Mad can take even more sets off our top level and achieve his first PR ranking in Queensland.
Vivid
The local Captain Falcon main has had a rather good season, acquiring wins over a few of our top level players. The Next Stop Over stands as his best result, beating J-Rods and past PR player Benedict to land third place out of the 24 attendees. Additionally, Vivid scores wins over high level such as two sets over Litty, one over Elijah and three over AppleMan. On the Queensland Showcase, he was ranked at 14th place just underneath Mad. Vivid scored impressive wins this season but with some more consistency, the Captain Falcon can see an even better season heading into the end of the year.
Sackboy
Some Melee talent was spotted in the Queensland Smash Ultimate scene this season as Sackboy took wins over high level eft and right. The clearest example of this can be seen at his run at Shopping Spree 19 where he placed fifth out of 32 attendees. Here, he took sets from Mad and GymKingKoopa before falling to Metalotl and BakedGoods to achieve his highest result this season. Another notable win was seen at Shopping Spree 24, where he made a huge upset over first seed AlastairBL to shock all who spectated. The Marth main placed 15th on the Queensland Showcase, displaying that he can pose a threat to the top level in the state as he eats an entire loaf of bread in between sets.
mini!
Lastly, we have mini! Queensland's dedicated Piranha Plant saw a variety of results across the season but outperformed themselves at Shopping Spree 18. This run was anything but mini. At this event, they cored wins over Metalotl and josh city to reach third place out of the 21 entrants. On top of this, they also took two sets off of AppleMan, despite the difficult matchup into Samus. The Piranha Plant enthusiast landed 16th on the Queensland Showcase, finding themselves in the realm of players who can threaten our top level.
PillowTalk Thee Stallion
One of the more dominant showings out of the inactive wonders, Pillowtalk tested the top level in the two tournaments he attended at Shopping Spree 15 and 17. In his small attendance, the Bayonetta took sets over Smay, J-Rods, Metalotl, Bagel, Elijah and two over Metalotl. Pillowtalk placed second and third respectively at these events, showing that he can return to top level PR if the minimum attendance is met in future seasons.
Maya
More international talent challenged our PR this season with Maya's ocassional attendance at our monthlies. At The Next Stop Over 2, he placed second out of 17 and beat Smay with Shiek to reach grand finals before falling to Metalotl. His next appearance was at Back on Track 2026 where he used Diddy Kong and took a set off of Litty to reach fourth before having his run ended again by Metalotl. With some more attendance, Maya can pose a threat to our top level heading into the final season of this year.
Dags
Although Dags only attended Shopping Spree 9 this season, his run was nothing to sneeze at. With Young Link, this past PR player made it all the way to second place out of 19 beating Smay, J-Rods, Metalotl, Bagel and Elijah only falling in the runback with Smay during grand finals. If Dags returns next season and meets the minimum attendance required for PR eligibility, he could find himself placing high on the PR if this sort of performance keeps up during bracket runs.
Queensland's Smash Ultimate scene has only grown this season and will likely continue to as the end of the year approaches. New players are already creating strong showings for themselves for the Sep-Dec season such as Mad and Benedict placing a recent top 3 at Shopping Spree 27. The Showcase is expected to shuffle as well for this final season of the year, as players are improving and adapting to each other constantly. Only time will tell...
