it's all yours
since dot's been putting work into the fox thread i may as well post my opinions of dedede's general strategy's here as well.
I have found the best way to play Dedede is as a general wait and punish character with strong spacing tools. This seems best as he has no approach options, awful movement speed and poor attack speed as well as lacking a projectile to use in neutral, but combined with his great survivability (hardest character to kill off the top, top five for living off the sides with a massive recovery), great range, good damage-per-hit and acceptable kill potential he can make it work.
The main tools he has at his disposal for punishes are:
Ftilt: great range and multi-hit means it has a long-lasting hitbox. 11% if all hits connect, acceptable start-up and end lag.
Dtilt: very quick move with good range. Deals 10% and can combo into itself at very low percents.
Jab: slow by jab standards but still one of Dedede's quicker moves. The first two hits link into each other well and do a respectable 4% each. From there you can either try to link it into the rest of the jab combo which can be a bit hit-or-miss, does 8% if you connect all hits though and the finisher is deceptively powerful. Can try dtilt. Can try grab which is one of Dedede's best options. At high percents if you're feeling greedy dsmash is also an option.
Grab: his grab range is above average and he gets great reward off his grabs. Dthrow into fair is a true combo at a great range of percentages and does a hefty 19%. Dthrow into nair is better at very low percents. Dthrow into bair can also work at mid percentages; does more damage but a bit more technically challenging to execute. It doesn't true combo at higher percents but depending on the vector inputs you can try to land an uair or a Rising Dedede if you're feeling lucky.
Nair is a decent option. Basically his only quick/non-laggy aerial and can combo into utilt at low damage. Has quite a limited hitbox however.
Inhale also does respectable damage. Having aerial grabs is in general very useful.
He can have a bit of trouble landing kill moves however. It is important to never try to force a kill move. Dsmash and usmash have O.K. range and speed and hit pretty hard but are not easy to land. Dash attack requires a hard read to land but is very powerful. The main use of it is to try and bait spotdodges. Bair is one of his better options as it is solidly powerful, has huge range and autocancels in a short hop, but the way he swings his hammer can make it hard to hit grounded opponents. Uair is also good for catching airborne opponents. Edgeguarding is one of his best sources of kills; his aerials have great range and his huge recovery means he can chase people deep.
Gordos are a powerful but very limited tool, mostly because any attack that deals more than 3% will reflect the gordo back at Dedede (they home in on him too). The most useful angle is the up-angled one, which can be used to edgeguard (try and hit people recovering low), cover Dedede's landings or to lob them up onto a platform. Gordos can also be used to try and dissuade edgeguards.
Most useful customs are imo Taste Test and Rising Dedede. Taste Test is like a buffed version of Inhale, minus the ability to move/change direction when you've landed it. Rising Dedede is almost strictly better than the default as long as you can sweetspot the ledge (and there's no reason why you shouldn't be able to). You do lose out on the default's super armour I guess.
In summary:
Q: why should I play Dedede?
A: because he looks funny and makes strange noises (shoutouts to Sakurai)

Red you wouldnt believe the gordo to fsmash KO Dean got on me at UQ. He was destroying a lot of QLD with gordos I'm quite scared of them now.

I have found the the most effective way to play Dedede is to attack as little as possible, because all his moves are terrible and you shouldn't use them.

king dedede is so broken. Dedede vs dk in smash 4 is as bad as dedede vs dk in brawl. the ledgetrap is such cancer. DK just cant deal with penquins i guess.
