Idk the maths on exact balancing of mafia and town, and it probably depends on the strength of the power roles of all the factions. 3-3-10 and 4-4-8 both seem possible so imo we shouldn't assume it's 3 or less members on each mafia faction or it could mislead us later on.

If anything understating how many mafia there are would be better for them as the town would play more reckless and may think they have lynched/killed all the mafia while there is one left

Oh, is that what happened? I wasn't around for that game so based on the result I thought it was just that both mafia factions were against the town together but weren't aware of a second faction.
If that's the case the 3-3-10 setup is more likely as that was what roughly happened in the previous 2 mafia game according to the other posts I've read so far?
I still don't see how presenting the possibility of there being more mafia than we might initially think is a bad thing though.
Let's say I really was trying to mislead people by suggesting 4 person mafia teams. What exactly would I be even trying to accomplish by doing this assuming people follow my lead? The only way people will play differently is maybe suspect more players than they otherwise would have, which is always a good thing anyway.
Anyway thanks for pointing out that the result was a tie between the two mafia factions in the last game we did like this. Didn't realise that was what had happened.
I'm pretty sure now that you bring it up that someone has discussed that result with me before actually but I'd forgotten about it and just assumed the two mafia teams must have outnumbered the town last time lol.
